There are more then one rifle season between now, and Jan 13th, Wear bright colors, ride after the dawn hunt, and before the sundown hunt, be seen, be heard, a bell, horn, put the squeaky brakes back on your bike you took off last year, there are places like Maybury/Tree Farm, that have no hunting.

Thanks for the reminder. However, my suggestion is to just plain stay away from any State Recreation land for the rest of the month.

You can still do night riding. No hunters after dark.

Don't stay off the trails during deer season.
A smart hunter will use you too push the deer their way.
In the south part of the state - no rifles , just shot guns and black powder.
I would be a little more careful around bow hunters.
Wear hunters orange, for sure.

Do what you want, but I don't think riding now is a problem. The deer are spooked by now and hiding out. If anything you might help get them moving. I avoid opening day, but that's past. I agree mid-day is preferred, but I've ridden morning and evening (after work) later season and I might see one hunter. I also don't think it's terribly dangerous. You'd have to be a really bad hunter to mistake a biker for a deer. There's hunting from fall to spring with small game, bow, firearm, black powder, etc. I've seen more small game hunters than deer.

Has there ever been a MTB rider even hit by a hunters gunfire?

Sure - nobody wants to be first one, but IMO it's a very-very small probability.

I'm aware of one recent incident with a hiker when the idiot deer hunter indiscriminately fired towards movement in the woods. I'm at a loss of words how moronic this is especially in a state park. The victim was hit in the hip with buckshot non life threatening.

In your Singletracks artical there is a link to a good site, "Mountain Biking During Hunting Season", in the blog below that artical one person suggested using lights like maybe blinky lights, I like that idea a lot.

I like the idea of using a blinky light.
Hunters, look for a flash or movement. A repeating flash would very quickly be understood.
I would use one front and rear.

Deer are very smart. More then once I have seen deer hide between the trail and the Road.
One of the biggest Bucks I have seen, I kicked up on a Jeep trail in Kensington. He just jumped the fence and walked toward I 96.
