Can I put a Sram Road Cassette on a MTB XD driver?

Postby chris_werth » November 29th, 2018, 12:58 pm

I have a XG-1199 Mtb cassette on my DT Swiss 350 hub. The 10,12,14,16,18.....gearing is not working and I would like to get a cassette with 1 tooth increments. Can I put a Sram XG-1190 11 speed road cassette on my XD driver with no problem?

No. The XG1190 still uses a Shimano splined style freehub.

Which cassette works on the XDR driver?

Or you could just go back to one gear, like I've always known you

You could buy a 3T cassette. Spendy but it has the gearing you want.

Aside from 3T....nothing. SRAM doesn't even have an XDR compatible cassette for sale yet. Can you even buy the XDR driver itself yet?

I cant remember where, maybe bikerumor, but I thought I saw recently that sram was coming out with a road cassette for their xd interface? If I remember right, I think it hinted at revisions to their road groups for 2019. Anyone else see this?
If indeed this is the case, it sounds like this would be what the OP is looking for?

Funny I have pretty much an identical problem. Go to MTBR drivtrain forum and you will see my post
It is for my Gravel/Commuter bike. I also ride on DT Swiss 350 hub. The 10-42 range has too much of spacing for me for and I don't like my cadence dropping over 10 rpm when I switch the gears. First of all a 11sp road cassette is not designed to fit on an XD driver. It gets worse than that. Assuming you will get a regular non XD driver. It will accept 11sp shimano mtb cassettes and sram NX 11sp cassette. I made a mistake and bought a 11sp SRAM PG1170 11-32 road cassette. Thinking that it would fit on my free hub no problem. Turns out it slides in easily, but it is too wide - Exactly by 1.8mm. DT - Swiss makes an 11sp road free hub to fit 11 sp road cassettes. The free hub is is of course 1.8 mm wider than the mtb hub. Which makes me think that 11sp road cassette is 1.8 mm wider than the mtb counterpart. That in itself may create shifting problems. Currently I am tempted to get the 11s road hub and see what happens. And as usual, cycling industry makes everything more and more complicated day by day.

I swapped out the 32 ring for a 30 and it feels much better. The 30x16 combo is the same gear inches as what I was running on the SS Pugs.

I just found out a (reply on mtbr forum). Shimano CS-HG800-11 11-34 cassette will fit on standard shimano free hub. I think this is the closest range 11s cassette we can have on a mtb. Ordering one soon.
