Dirt in the wheel bearings with a SRAM freehub

Postby 2Old2BFast » May 14th, 2019, 7:04 pm

I have an SRAM freehub and dirt is getting in my wheel bearings on the freehub side. (The grease and bearings on the other side look just like they did when I put them in last winter.)

The seal looks good. Obviously, I can't see how it is seating, but when I gently run a hook scriber around the seal, there is no gap anywhere, so I think it is seated properly.

Any thoughts?

Dirt will always get into bike bearings unless they are sealed cartridge bearings.
I don't think a free hub has a sealed cartridge bearing.
Free hubs will fill with dirt over time, but muddy water gets in faster then dust.

To clean a free hub: spray oil in and spin until it sounds good. Don't try to take apart to clean.
