Michigan '5 foot clearance' bills

Postby Brian_Smith » February 26th, 2017, 9:03 am

2 bills are currently under discussion in committee that would establish a 5' clearance for vehicles passing cyclists on the road. The link below has contact info for the sponsors and committee members - contact them and you district representative to show your support!

I am working on this locally as well via city ordinances
Grand Rapids passed this so we are trying to get Walker, Wyoming, Grandville, Kentwood and East Grand Rapids to follow suit

Probably not. IME, most people already give me the widest possible berth when passing now. Those that intend to "buzz" me will likely do so irregardless. But passing this bill will allow the politicians (and other interest groups) to point at it and declare that they have "done something!!!" It's 97% political theater.

Cynical, I know, but likely accurate.

They give law enforcement and the courts a defined minimum distance to work with. A definite help when dealing with the legal process.
Without it, there isn't an enforceable safe distance defined.

Now if they'd build roads with shoulder for 5' clearance we'd be good! Maybe this is a start. Would love to use my bike more for getting around but infrastructure is not conducive to this.

Wide shoulder and swept regularly. Some of the roads I ride I end up having to be in with traffic anyway because of all the debris on the wide shoulders. People get upset that I'm not riding over there but they don't give me a chance to explain why to non-bikers -- If you don't ride there is a lot of dangers you aren't aware of.

Yeah I always get a few punctures early spring as I pick up all the debris on the shoulders from all winter!
