Nate Phelps, President of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association and Martin Hall President of the Western MMBA announced an exciting new initiative called "Fifty in Five" The goal of establishing 50 miles of new trail in the next 5 years for our chapter. Projects in discussion include Stanaback Park in Kentwood, The Grand Loop in Grand Rapids, Bass River expansion, Ionia expansion, 10 Mile Landfill, Shore Acres in Saugatuck, Big Prairie at Hardy Dam, Ottawa Co trails, Spring Lake Lake trails and Manistee Co. trails. Need a lot of volunteers! Are you ready? :D

I'm in. When do we start?

Also, is there any more that can be disclosed about these new trails / additions?

Hope to start a few projects this spring. There really isn't anything else to disclose, all the locations mentioned are being worked on. Not sure what each location will offer us yet

I think I remember the Hardy Dam project being 30 miles on it's own. Is that 30 miles of MTB trail, or all-purpose, or what? Or was I mistaken about the distance.

I keep watching for Stanaback Park info too, since I work close to there.

There are still ongoing talks with Owasippe managers too, as far as I know.

yes, Hardy Dam is 30-40 miles of multi-use trail. Hike, bike and ski. No horses.

Even though my volunteer hours are getting spread a bit thin these days with other commitments, I plan on helping with the Bass River trail.

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking about Bass as it is now, but from what Tom tells me, it could be very cool. How cool would it be to ride Bass and get in some hills?

Count me in.

We should put up one of those graphic thermometer type things on the wmmba web site to show progress toward the 50 in 5 goal. Similar to the ones they use when raising funds for a charity, but instead measure miles of trail access added or built. Maybe something more clever than a thermometer that is related to bikes... I'm not that clever.

Here is the link to the Mlive article about the proposed Spring Lake Township trial.

If I mapped it right; is that property just west of Grand Haven Rd and 2 roads south of Pontaluna?

This all really sounds great. But what about existing trails like Aman park? It's a very fun place to ride but was closed because of rude riders. Funny thing is I go in there frequently in the summer and there are 2 cars at the most in the parking lot. What a waste! It's vastly under utilized. Somehow maybe it's time to revisit opening this park to trail riding. :)

we should consider trying to get it re-opened, I agree. I skied there this winter and it is in really bad need of trimming.
