Rouge Park- Detroit Trail Day 4/18 at 10 am

Postby froggyrider » April 13th, 2010, 5:57 pm

The Rouge Park Trail is ready for new trail planning and design. After a brief hiatus, the MetroSouth Chapter of the MMBA resumed cutting new trail last year at the City of Detroit's Rouge Park. We are continuing our successful partnerships with the Student Conservation Association, the Greening of Detroit, the Friends of Rouge Park, and the City of Detroit Department of Parks and Recreation to build Michigan's first urban mountain bike trail.

For our trail day this Sunday April 18, we will be mostly flagging and doing some basic rough cutting between Joy and Tireman on the east side of the river. This will help us complete the loop on that block, and eventually we will add other loops to the north. This trailday will be a great opportunity to learn how to scout, design and flag proposed sections of new trail. We're also looking for guidance from more-experienced TCs to help us design fun, flowing singletrack to MMBA/IMBA standards. Rouge Park has some great terrain, and there are some perfect contour lines, well above the floodplain. Come join us and check out an emerging new trail.

2010 Goals for Rouge include having new trail flagged on the east side of the river between Joy and Tireman so that the MMBA and other volunteers from groups listed above can help us with some major trail cutting during the summer.

So, if you have been through MMBA Trail Crew training, are or were a TC (trail coordinator), think like a TC or are curious how TC's pick and choose trail lines, this trail day is for you. We do not need a ton of people to cut trail until the summer, so look for more dates upcoming. For this trail day, we need the creative trail design thinkers! This is a great way to see the trail as well if you have never ridden it. It is perfect to combine with a Hines Drive/Rouge Park/Outer Drive urban kind of on road/off road ride.

Bagels and coffee will be available for when we meet at ten am.

We have a small but hearty group ready to flag tomorrow. Join us if you want to see some real potential for a trail within the city limits of Detroit!

Scott Krahn
Anthony Stefani
David Hurst
Jason Friendmann
Loren Konkus
David Thomspon
Claudia Bean

Joe Foy

We flagged a whole bunch of new trail to be cut this summer. The Co TC's, Chris and Jason, will post up soon about some pre cutting as the foliage grows in.
