City of Lapeer Oakdale Trail

The CIty of Lapeer, Michigan is poised to become a riding and recreation center for the Thumb region. City administrators have given the green light to build the first phase of a 6-8 mile, multiuse system on what used to be the Oakdale state home. This will be the only sanctioned access for mountain biking in Lapeer and Genesee counties. While the site is not extremely hilly, it does offer some nice rolling terrain along Farmer's Creek and in a mature forest canopy near the Polar Palace (if you know Lapeer). The trail plan calls for green circle, blue square, and some short black diamond sections in the various phases, all accessed from a central trailhead by the Mott Community College building.

Construction is already underway (shoot, kids are already riding it!) on phase 1, with a .25 mile handcut bench on the Demille Boulevard embankment and some machine-built beginner sections with features including berms, rollers, small jumps, rock features, and a roller double. The first phase will end up around .8 of a mile long and will connect to future phases by going under the Demille railway overpass on both sides of the tracks.

The next trail day is September 2 from 9-1. Park at the Ponds and Prairies trail head by the Chatfield School playground. Tools and water provided. We will finish a gorgeous line of hand cut bench this day, if the local school kids don't finish it this week.

September 9 will be a festive Trail Day with trail plan overview, trail building demo, free lunch, free bike blender smoothies, bike/helmet giveaways and a work session. This will run from 10-4.

I was born and raised in Lapeer. City leaders have embraced a bold vision to develop a recreation corridor on city-owned, undeveloped property. If you are a local or know a local, pass it on!
